Spider-Man has always benefited from one of the best rogues’ galleries in comics, but the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales features a villain whom some franchise fans may not immediately recognize: a businessman named Simon Krieger. While it probably won’t come as much as a surprise that Miles Morales focuses on a new villain given that it’s a spin-off of the Marvel’s Spider-Man story, it turns out that Krieger isn’t actually an entirely new face in the Marvel universe. The game’s ending also strongly suggests that this won’t be the last we see of him. Let’s break down who Simon Krieger is, his comic book origin, what happened to him at the end of the game, and whether we’ll see him in the inevitable Marvel’s Spider-Man 2… Krieger discovers a deadly side effect of the Nuform project but has no interest in abandoning his research just because a few people might die. In fact, Krieger and his army of goons — which includes notable Spidey villain The Prowler/Miles’ uncle Aaron Davis — have already killed some people who discovered the horrible truth about the Nuform project and intended to tell the world about it. It’s this exact research with Nuform that lands Krieger in the crosshairs of The Tinkerer, the game’s other big villain, who leads a terrorist group known as The Underground, which is hellbent on taking down Roxxon and its Nuform project at all costs. We learn by the end of the game that the Tinkerer is actually Miles’ best friend Phin Mason, who has a score to settle with Krieger and Roxxon after the project resulted in her brother’s death. All points converge, including Miles, by the game’s explosive end, which we’ll get to in just a second. But first…
Who is Simon Krieger’s Voice Actor?
If Krieger’s voice in the game sounds familiar, that’s likely because he’s played by veteran video game voice actor Troy Baker. This is actually Baker’s second Marvel credit of the year. He also voiced Bruce Banner in Marvel’s Avengers. Baker’s comically large list of video game credits also includes Joel in The Last of Us, Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite, Samuel Drake in Uncharted 4, Jason Todd in Batman: Arkham Knight, and many other roles. This is Baker’s first appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man and unlikely his last. Besides the name, basic looks, and association with a company called Roxxon, the version of Krieger seen in the comics and the version seen in Miles Morales are pretty different. That’s not surprising since Marvel’s Spider-Man takes place in its own corner of the Marvel universe separate from the comics and movies for the most part.
What Happens to Simon Krieger at the End of the Game?
At the end of Miles Morales, we learn that Phin intends to blow up the Nuform reactor at Roxxon Plaza. The problem is that Krieger has rigged the reactor to destroy Harlem rather than the building itself. While Miles is unable to prevent Phin from triggering the detonation, the pair are able to put aside their differences long enough to work together to contain the worst of the blast. Sadly, it seems that Phin is killed in the resulting explosion. As for Krieger, he is arrested after Uncle Aaron turns him into the police. We watch Krieger escorted into a police car, seemingly destined to spend a few years behind bars. Fortunately for Krieger, no villains stays in jail for long in the world of comic books. While it’s certainly likely that Krieger will return given the ambiguous nature of his final moments, it’s also strongly suggested during a Miles Morales post-credits sequence that the next Spider-Man game will focus on a Marvel A-list villain. Still, we suspect that Krieger might have some role to play in future adventures.
